BECAUSE YOU'VE ASKED, Here is a list of some really great LOCAL UNIQUE places to eat in San Antonio. If you have a question regarding a restaurant, please fill out the comment form and we will get back to you! We know the inside scoop! (We are not listing "chain" or multi-city places.)
Brasserie Pavil~ fabulous Parisian bistro fare in a beautiful building, complete with authentic french booths, "Metro" tiles and over-sized antique mirrors- this is worth it! Also, the best boulangerie and patisserie in San Antonio. Huebner at 1604.
Cascabel~ for true interior Mexican cuisine, on South St. Mary's in Southtown
Guajillos~ for delicious authentic Mexican food specializing in Tacos al Pastor... rustic roadside eatery, just outside 410 on Blanco
Dough~ THE best pizza in San Antonio, wonderful Italian food, just inside 410, also on Blanco in shopping strip on the west side of Blanco
Lien Hung~ Most authentic Thai, in a shady area, divey place- NOT fancy or even easy on the eyes, BUT the most incredible Pho around... Off Eisenhower or Rittiman- corner of Fratt and Remount outside 410 on the East side
Thai Lao Orchid~ Clean cut family run Thai in Alamo Heights, really good fresh Thai, corner of B'way and Sunset
La Fonda on MAIN~ not to be confused with the other La Fondas around town, wonderful Mex/Tex/Mex with a charming courtyard and great "scene." On Main in historic Monte Vista...
El Mirador~ St. Mary's downtown, Tex-Mex heaven! Great food, always crowded
Biga on the Banks~ BEST restaurant on the river, high end cross cultural cuisine, quite expensive, very popular, I have not been in a while- did someone tell me this closed??
Pasha~ wonderful Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, shwarma city sweetheart! Order-up styled counter, Just off I-10 on Bitters
Bistro Vatel, Ciao Lavanderia, Bistro Bakery (at Olmos Circle in Olmos Park) and Cafe Des Artistes in SAMA on the river~all owned by Damien Watel, a french transplant, awesome restaurants- try them all!
Silo~ two locations, one in Alamo Heights on Austin Hwy. and one on Loop 1604... elevated cuisine, excellent food, and a cute chef to boot!
W.D. Deli~ quirky deli on B'way btw downtown and Alamo Heights, casual, near museums- great sandwiches and soups, old SA favorite
Liberty Bar~ "crooked house" off 281 at Josephine, seriously good food, most unique long time SA popular spot... fun nightlife as well... I think this landmark has moved- we must wait to see if it meets our standards...
Chris Madrid's~ best hamburger in town, and possibly the world. Don't let the long lines keep you from eating here...Blanco at Hollywood (Yummy Burger at Yum Bistro gives this burger a run though!)
Green~ on N. Flores, vegetarian and delicious, cool old brick building, good vibe, pretty patio- very casual.
Check out the Pearl Brewery~ Il Sogno- chic elevated Italian, Farm to Table- order up counter soups, salads and sammies, both very good. SandBar- yummy seafood.
La Gloria~ is very good with a fun atmoshphere- always happening. Great interior MX.
Yum Bistro~ most likely anything on Broadway is "tourist trappy" and sub-par edible food for foodies (aside from the occasional special at Cappy's or Cappycinos) but this little kitchy spot has some really good tasting food. It's just at 410 in a funny little area, but worth a stop for a nice lunch.

If you would like us to include a "Do Not Bother Eating Here" list, please let us know- there are MANY that have good and even great reviews in some guides and/or publications that are truly NOT worth the time and money.
I have gotten so many responses to this- I would rather keep it as is- in a personal e-mail. An overwhelming number of you have sent me info on bad service, food or otherwise. I am not out to close down anyone. If I get enough messages from you- I simply will forward them to the establishment for their perusal, or not.
